India's decision to rest Jasprit Bumrah for the second Test against England has drawn criticism, especially from former players like Kumar Sangakkara, Ravi Shastri and Dale Steyn. With India trailing 0-1 in the series, the team management's decision to stick to a pre-decided plan of resting Bumrah has raised questions about their approach to crucial matches and team selection strategy.

The decision by the Indian team management to rest Jasprit Bumrah, their key pace bowler, for the second Test against England at Edgbaston has ignited controversy. This move, overseen by head coach Gautam Gambhir, has drawn criticism from various cricket analysts. India currently trails the five-match series 0-1, and despite a week-long interval between the first and second Tests, the team adhered to a pre-determined plan to limit Bumrah's participation to three Tests. This decision has prompted reactions from prominent former players, including Ravi Shastri, Dale Steyn, and Kumar Sangakkara.

India implemented three alterations to their playing XI for the Edgbaston Test. Akash Deep stepped in for Bumrah, Nitish Reddy replaced Shardul Thakur, and Washington Sundar took Sai Sudharsan's place. Additionally, Karun Nair was elevated to the number three batting position.

The choice to rest Bumrah has faced intense scrutiny, particularly considering the match's significance and India's recent Test performance. Since September of the previous year, the team has suffered seven Test defeats, managing only one victory and one draw in their last nine encounters.

Former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara has openly questioned the rationale behind sidelining Bumrah, suggesting that the circumstances warranted a different strategy.

"It's interesting to understand the decision-making process and who is involved. Is there consultation with the players or the medical staff? Does the Lord's Test take precedence over the entire series? The series is at stake," Sangakkara commented on Sky Sports. "Looking at the current state of play, the day is evenly balanced, perhaps leaning slightly towards England with five wickets down. I would have anticipated the coach approaching Bumrah, acknowledging the initial plan for him to play the 3rd and 5th Tests but emphasizing the importance of the first two. They could then assess his availability for the third Test, considering the subsequent two-week break."

Some speculate that Bumrah's rest is aimed at ensuring his fitness for the upcoming Lord's Test. However, critics contend that with India already behind in the series, his presence could have been vital in preventing a 0-2 deficit.

Sangakkara also highlighted that the numerous changes to the playing XI could be indicative of the pressure felt by the team management due to recent unfavorable results.

"This isn't solely a reaction to the previous Test. There's likely discussion surrounding the past 9-10 matches, with seven losses, one win, and one draw. There's a degree of 'baggage' associated with reversing that trend. Consequently, there was considerable pressure, leading them to evaluate the situation and implement widespread changes," Sangakkara concluded.
