Shubman Gill's Ascendancy: A Testament to Leadership in Edgbaston Test

Shubman Gill celebrates a remarkable innings, cementing his role as captain.

Shubman Gill, India's new captain, has silenced doubters and solidified his position as the team's premier batsman during the Edgbaston Test. His performance underscores his leadership qualities and answers lingering questions about his ability to perform in Test matches away from home.

The day before the Edgbaston Test, while many regulars opted for rest, Gill engaged in a rigorous training session. This dedication, featuring an extended batting session and intense endurance drills, highlights his commitment.

His tireless running between the wickets on Thursday, accumulating runs towards his score of 195, demonstrated the tangible results of his preparation.

Entering the series with skepticism surrounding his credentials as a Test batter and leader, Gill has emphatically dispelled those doubts. After three innings as captain, the 25-year-old has emerged as the linchpin of India's Test batting lineup. His insatiable appetite for runs was once again on full display.

The decision to appoint Gill as captain echoes South Africa's bold move to install Graeme Smith as captain in his early twenties back in 2003. Interestingly, Smith's captaincy also began auspiciously in England, with a double century at Edgbaston followed by another at Lord's.

By surpassing Sunil Gavaskar's score of 221 (achieved in 1979), Gill now holds the record for the highest score by an Indian batsman in England. With the next Test scheduled at Lord's, and already having a century in Leeds, Gill will undoubtedly aim to surpass Smith's achievements.

Gill's composed presence at the crease reflects his role as the leader of India's batting unit. His impact extends beyond his personal achievements; he actively supports the younger batsmen. As Yashasvi Jaiswal noted after the first day's play, "Gill has been amazing... He's very clear in his head about what he needs to do with the team, and we are very confident." Jaiswal further added that the team focuses on building deep partnerships and playing session by session with a positive mindset.

Despite primarily opening throughout his career, Gill's most impressive red-ball performances have come in the middle order. During a U-19 tour of England in 2018, under the guidance of Rahul Dravid, Gill was persuaded to bat at No. 3. Abhay Sharma, a member of Dravid's support staff, recalled to TOI that the England tour was a turning point for Shubman, where he reached a new level.

Sharma recounted discussions about Gill's batting position, with Prithvi Shaw opening and other specialist openers available. Gill's strength in the 'V' allowed him to play long innings and control the tempo. An innings of 147 off 120 balls in challenging conditions in Brighton solidified his potential.
