Djokovic Mounts Stunning Comeback Against De Minaur at Wimbledon 2025
London – Novak Djokovic demonstrated his resilience and champion's spirit by overcoming a slow start to defeat Alex de Minaur in the fourth round of Wimbledon 2025. After dropping the first set, the Serbian legend rallied to secure a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory, marking his 16th quarterfinal appearance at the prestigious tournament.
The match, lasting three hours and 18 minutes, saw Djokovic initially struggle, losing the first set in just 30 minutes. However, the 38-year-old found his rhythm, particularly dominating the fourth set by winning five consecutive games.
The atmosphere at Centre Court was electric, with cool winds and even Roger Federer in attendance. De Minaur, who had previously withdrawn from last year's quarterfinal due to injury, initially presented a strong challenge. However, Djokovic's strategic adjustments, including increasing the pace on his forehand and targeting De Minaur's backhand, proved decisive.
The second set saw a tense exchange of breaks, with the second game featuring nine deuces and six break points. Djokovic eventually stabilized, taking a 3-1 lead and ultimately winning the set. De Minaur, supported by his fiance Katie Boulter, faltered in the third set, allowing Djokovic to seize a two-sets-to-one advantage.
Despite De Minaur surging to a 4-1 lead in the fourth set, threatening to extend the match to a fifth, Djokovic remained composed. He broke back in the seventh game, leveled the score at 4-4, and then closed out the match, denying any chance of a comeback.
Addressing concerns about his physical condition, Djokovic dismissed any serious stomach issues, attributing his need for a breather to the intensity of long rallies. He humorously acknowledged Federer's presence, stating, "It's probably the first time he has watched me and I've won the match. The last couple I lost, it's good to break the curse."
In another fourth-round match, Italian Flavio Cobolli defeated Marin Cilic to reach his first Wimbledon quarterfinal. Cobolli is set to face his idol, Djokovic, in the next round, marking their second career meeting.
Belinda Bencic also advanced to the quarterfinals, defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova.
